  • Horror Remakes

As I am sure everyone is aware of Horror Remakes are the latest trend in Hollywood because they require less work, make more money because of the built in fan base, and require little marketing given their existing brand awareness.  Having watched some though I can see where in some cases the remake is better than the original.  It’s all opinion of course and this is just my take on it.

Some of the remakes I have enjoyed the most are the ones that go deeper into why a psycho is a psycho.  When I watch the Halloween remakes, or Black Christmas I find myself enjoying them more than I ever did with the original.  You see with both of these films we have a psycho who just kills.  We don’t know why, we don’t understand any of his motives, he just does what he does.  Sure that has it’s place but I find it much more terrifying when I see what made this individual into the psycho he would evolve into and in both of the remakes listed above the go into that.  I began to think that the directors of these films probably felt the same way I do which is why they remade their respective films with the backstory added into it.  Each time it made the film more enjoyable to me as well.  It added some depth to the story, made you sympathize with the killer while also wishing someone would take him down.  It’s multi layered and more fun to watch.

However there are also remakes that exist to just add in more gore, violence and mayhem.  In these cases I feel that the remake serve no purpose other than to shock, and further desensitize a violence crazed culture.  A great example of this is the Hills Have Eyes.  This movie is so lacking in humanity that the bit of respect for life it shows is so minuscule it’s not enough to overcome everything else going on.  I have thought about writing about the scene that I am so against but I anyone who has seen already knows what I am talking about and if you haven’t seen it then you have at least heard about it or have no interest in this film.

So that’s my opinion on Horror movie remakes.  Is there a type of remake that I am forgetting about?

  • It’s Official!

I am now officially a reporter for the www.horrornews.net website and have my first seven articles published on the front page of the website now.  This is a premiere site for all things horror related so please check it out and show some support for the horror genre.  Let me know if you have any questions about the site, or what I wrote for them.  SO EXCITED!

  • I finally did it!

I had started this blog to provide myself with a creative outlet for my writing only to find that I have no idea what to write about.  I would always come to this site, and stare blankly at the white space that should have been where I had a blog entry written.  It was frustrating to say the least.  I would read other blogs on here and comment on their material but still have none of my own.  A little under a week ago though I was hit hard with what I can do.  The website horrornews.net which is one I love to read began advertising for 4 more reporters.  Obviously like many websites it is non paying but that’s okay because it satisfies a need inside of me to do something creatively and I realized just how much I love discussing horror everything when I began to look into this further.  I submitted my application, and some sample writing to show my style and what I can bring to the horrornews.net website.  Needless to say I am excited, and really want this job.  It has awakened in me something strong and this is an excitement I have not felt for some time.  It’s great to get over writers block and find that subject that I didn’t realize how much I loved to write for until now.

  • Linux OS

Have you ever been inclined to try a OS that is different from what you are used to?

I always love to try new technology and push what I think I can do.  I am trying out Ubuntu right now and think it’s pretty great.  It’s the little things that I love so far like it’s ease of use, great applications, and the cleanness of it all.  Sometimes you hear Linux and you might think it’s difficult but don’t be so hasty.  You can easily request a Ubuntu CD here https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ and then just try it by running it off of the CD without making any changes to your computer.  I encourage everyone to at least give it a shot and see if you like it or not.
